Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Your attitude toward language learning is crucial to your child's success.
Sometimes parents say they can’t help their son or daughter with their language learning as they don’t speak that language. Don’t stress – most parents don’t have detailed knowledge of mathematics or biology or history. It’s my job at school to teach the language, but there are some simple things that you can do to make your son or daughter’s experience a rich one:
I encourage you to join your child in exploring this website and helping them to access the resources I have created and/or linked. On the site you’ll find the songs, stories, video clips, games and activities we are using in our lessons. Students can use the site to review things we have been doing in class and extend on and practise their italiano at home. And don't forget to visit the Blog page often.

It’s my job at school to teach the language, but there are some simple things that you can do to make your son or daughter’s experience a rich one:
- Be positive. Learning a language is an asset for life.
- Encourage your son or daughter to keep at it if they find something difficult, rather than giving up.
- Ask your child about Italian class – what topic are you doing this term? What new words did you learn today?
- Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I can address almost anything straight away.
- Have your son or daughter teach you to say something in the language every week. This also makes for a fun family bonding experience.
- Engage in cultural opportunities: cook/eat Italian food, visit Italian restaurants, listen to Italian music, visit Italian cultural exhibits or art fairs, read Italian newspapers. (i.e. Gazzetta dello Sport), watch Italian soccer on TV.

Why Learn Italian?
- Italian is one of the major community languages in Australia and also an important language for culture, trade and technology throughout the world.
- Competent speakers of Italian are a great asset to Australian society, most especially in the areas of commerce, tourism, education, community services and international law.
- The study of Italian language and Italian culture is a window into European culture and the rich renaissance heritage of Italian music, art and sculpture.
- Italian is a relatively easy language for English speakers to learn as its alphabet is phonemic and both languages share Latin roots.
